HONOR THE GAME!
RE-LAX!It’s that time again! Lacrosse returns to Mt. Olive Township for another season of fast-paced fun. We welcome all of our returning veterans and newest registrants. You are part of the ever-growing interest in lacrosse in the community. Our Club is honored to provide this opportunity for you and your child to learn and enjoy this exciting sport of lacrosse. Our goal as a Club is to teach the sport of lacrosse and build a respect and honor for the game. Wins and losses at the recreation level are secondary to the fun and long lasting memories that participating in a sport provides a child. We encourage parents to support that philosophy. Success is measured in many forms. Our success will be built on providing a fair and level playing field for all players to be a part of.
GETTING ORIENTEDThe Club held its annual player/parent orientation on Saturday, February 5th at the Mt. Olive Middle School cafeteria. It was a great opportunity for the parents to meet some of those that are working hard behind the scenes to build the organization, as well as a chance for the organization to bring the parents up to speed with how our Club operates. There were tables available for parents and players to save on group equipment orders and merchandise available for practice and spirit wear. Practice and game schedules were distributed, as well as finalization of the necessary forms for the Club to facilitate. Players had an opportunity to get into the lacrosse mindset and meet other teammates. Coaches and board members were introduced and new registrants received US Lacrosse Parent Guides, courtesy of the Club. Our thanks to the high school coaches for giving of their time to attend and introduce themselves to the parents. David Gallucci (HS boys head coach) and Brigitte Geiger (HS girls head coach) offered their encouragement and support to the members of the Club. The Club is very appreciative for their appearance and their willingness to remain throughout the entire orientation. We wish them the best of luck in their endeavors at the high school and hope to build a successful future that will benefit both programs.
DON’T BE LAX!Registration is now closed at all levels, as the season is now scheduled to begin. For future reference, please note that since our sport runs during the spring season, our registration campaign begins in October. Both leagues begin scheduling for the spring season in December/January. Most towns close their registrations in January; however, since we are new to our community and most residents are not familiar with how the lacrosse season operates, we expanded our registrations through February 28th. So, from this point forward, in order to get an idea of how many teams we will be fielding for the coming season, we encourage early registrations next fall/winter. NJJLL rules recommend that team rosters not exceed 22-25 players, to appropriate adequate playing time for all players. In order to alleviate any closing of levels, while players still wish to participate, we need to know early enough during the campaign to assign additional teams at particular levels, if necessary, and make sure we have enough coaches to supervise those respective levels. Your cooperation in the future would help us offer a more beneficial program for all of the players in the community.
The New Jersey Pride professional Major League Lacrosse team is offering a fundraising opportunity for the Club. Included in your information packet, distributed at orientation, an order form for game tickets was afforded to each member. For every $16 ticket sold, $6 comes back to the Club. It is a wonderful fundraising opportunity for our Club, as well as a great opportunity for you and your family to experience a professional lacrosse game. Please consider planning a game to attend this season and show your Mt. Olive pride to the New Jersey Pride. Ticket orders must be submitted to the NJ Pride by April 1st. For additional forms, contact Administrative VP Chris Killian at (973) 479-0990 or email at KillianC1@aol.com.
WINS OF CHANGEAll team schedules that were distributed at orientation are subject to change. Field availability, opponent and/or referee scheduling conflicts, etc. may cause us to change some game times, dates, and/or locations. Your team head coach or team parent will address any changes reflected to your respective teams schedule.
APPROACH THE COACHCoaches for all levels are as follows: Boys Program- 3rd/4th grade Clinic team: Jeffery Nowling - 5th grade Youth team: Joe Gates/Pat Milone. - 6th/7th grade Jr. Varsity team: Chris Killian/Mike Pizzirusso/Gregg Routi - 8th grade Varsity team: Garry Merkle/Skot Koenig/Sam Shaver.
Girls Program- 4th/5th/6th grade Jr. Varsity team: Chrissy Priest/Steve DiGerolamo. - 7th/8th grade Varsity team: Jeff Dyer.
Our Club emphasizes the “24-hour rule.” If you have an issue with your respective team head coach, we encourage you not to approach that coach while emotions may be high after a game. Allow both parties a 24-hour “cooling down” period before you attempt to make contact with that particular coach. Let level heads prevail, especially in front of the children. Of course, we’d like to pretend that this will never happen, but the reality is there is always the possibility. Any concerns or comments that cannot be handled by your team head coach can be addressed to the following individuals – Boys Vice President Garry Merkle for issues regarding 3rd – 7th grade Clinic and boys program @ (973) 584-7525 or HGMerk@aol.com - Administrative Vice President Chris Killian for issues regarding 8th grade boys program @ (973) 479-0990 or KillianC1@aol.com - Girls Vice President Brigitte Geiger for issues regarding 4th-8th grade girls program @ (973) 927-5673 or mohsfh@optonline.net. The respective team head coaches will announce team parent contact information, once those roles have been established and confirmed through the Club. CONVENTION REACTION The 2005 US Lacrosse National Convention, held in Philadelphia from January 14th-16th was a record setting event for US Lacrosse and the lacrosse community. The convention drew 5,212 attendees. The highlight was the live demonstration lacrosse field set up in one of the convention center exhibit halls. Coaches were able to use live bodies to demonstrate skills, drills, and game situations. Seating was available for over 800 people during the various clinics and demonstrations. The convention utilized both the Pennsylvania Convention Center and the adjoining Philadelphia Marriott. Next year’s convention is already scheduled for January 13th-16th in Philadelphia. Over 100 lacrosse equipment and apparel companies set up shop in an expanded vendor exhibition area. The convention also featured numerous meetings, award ceremonies, and recruiting affairs. The convention welcomed members of the 2005 US Women’s World Cup, professional players from Men’s Major League Lacrosse (MLL), legendary lacrosse players Gary Gait, Mark Millon, and upcoming lacrosse star and former Syracuse attack man Mike Powell (best known for his ESPN highlight summersault during a Syracuse game in 2004). US Lacrosse plans an even bigger convention next year in hopes that the ever-expanding sport of lacrosse will draw more interest in the annual event.
FULL CUP-ETITION 10 COUNTRIES – 10 DAYS – 1 WORLD CHAMPION! That is the slogan for the 2005 IFWLA Women’s World Cup, hosted by US Lacrosse at the US Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland from June 23rd through July 2nd. This is the first time since 1986 that the United States has hosted the IFWLA Women’s World Cup. It will be an exciting opportunity to see the best women’s lacrosse players in the world competing for the honor of being crowned true world champions of lacrosse. The last time the United States hosted the World Cup, back in 1986, Australia shocked the world by beating the US 10-7 in the final held in Swarthmore, PA. It was the first and last time that any other team than the United States has won the World Cup. The US is 5-5 lifetime against Australia, and 26-0 against all other opponents. However, England is considered the American’s fiercest foe this time around. Aside from the United States, England, and Australia, some other teams among the ten countries will be Canada, Japan, Germany, and New Zealand. Lacrosse enthusiasts can receive the latest news about the 2005 IFWLA World Cup by visiting the event home page at: www.uslacrosse.org/worldcup
NBC-ING IS BELIEVING In the never-ending attempt to promote the sport of lacrosse, the National Lacrosse League (NLL) held its annual Lacrosse All-Star game on Saturday, February 26th in Calgary, Canada. It was broadcast live on NBC television at 2pm that afternoon. The indoor lacrosse league, which bolsters 10 teams, including All-Star lacrosse players Gary Gait and Casey Powell, offered an exciting indoor experience, showcasing many talented professional lacrosse players, who compete in the indoor leagues throughout the winter months.. The game is somewhat different than traditional outdoor lacrosse, with teams of 6 on 6 and goalies dressed in heavy equipment, defending against a hockey style goal. The fundamentals of the game remain, with emphasis on stick skills and non-stop, faced paced action. The East defeated the West in an exciting 11-10 overtime game. John Tavares of the Buffalo Bandits scored the winning goal for the East, just 1:15 into overtime. It was an exciting game and a perfect opportunity to promote the sport of lacrosse on network television
